  • Specialist equipment would be selected to help you achieve a high quality finish and/or to complete a complex job.
  • You should always refer to data sheets that explain how to use a pieces of equipment correctly and what health and safety considerations need to be taken.

  • Ensure you wear the appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) such as goggles.
  • Only use equipment you have been shown how to use by your teacher or competent person.

  • Inspect the equipment you are using to make sure it is safe and in good working order.
  • Some equipment requires it to be tested to a set standard every year.
  • For example extraction units to reduce dust in the air.
  • Golden rule: if in doubt - do not use it.

  • All processes and equipment should have a risk assessment which explains the potential dangers and how to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Each risk assessment will be specific to the equipment, location and users.

Outsourcing

Outsourcing

  • You may not always have the tools or equipment to complete the task, so may rely on another company that does.
  • This is known as outsourcing as you are giving them a task to complete outside of your company.
  • An example might be powder coating a piece of metal or sand blasting work to clean it.
