Brownian Motion

Gas particles move randomly. The random movement of gas particles is called Brownian Motion.

Brownian motion

Brownian motion

  • Brownian motion is named after Robert Brown.
  • Robert Brown was a British botanist (someone who studies plants).
  • Brownian motion is the random movement of particles suspended in a liquid or gas.
Pollen in water

Pollen in water

  • In 1827, Robert Brown studied the effects of pollen in water.
  • Robert Brown noticed the pollen moves around randomly.
Brownian motion in fluids

Brownian motion in fluids

  • Liquids and gases can be called fluids.
  • The random motion of particles happens because they hit each other.
  • After hitting, the particles change direction.
