Oxides

Science: KS3, topic 2.4.10

Metal and Non-Metal Oxides

An oxide is when an element reacts with oxygen to form a compound. These elements can bond with oxygen after burning it in air.

Metal oxides

Metal oxides

  • If a metal reacts with oxygen it will form a metal oxide.
  • Metal + oxygen → metal oxide
  • Iron + oxygen → iron oxide
  • Magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide
  • Metal oxides are alkaline.
  • Metal oxides are solids at room temperature.
Non-metal oxides

Non-metal oxides

  • If a non-metal reacts with oxygen it will form a non-metal oxide.
  • Non-metal + oxygen → non-metal oxide
  • Carbon + oxygen → carbon dioxide
  • Sulfur + oxygen → sulfur dioxide
    • Sulfur dioxide dissolves in water in the clouds to form acid rain.
  • Non-metal oxides are acidic.
  • Non-metal oxides are gases at room temperature.

Test yourself on Oxides

  • What gas dissolves in water in clouds to cause acid rain?

  • Choose the correct statement in each pair about metal and non-metal oxides.

  • An unknown element burns in air. The oxide formed is a solid and is alkaline. What type of element is this most likely to be?
