Particles

Science: KS3, topic 2.1.1

Particles

Everything in the universe is made of tiny ‘particles’.

Particles

  • We imagine these particles to be like lots of small balls.
  • You cannot see them with your eyes, but scientists have lots of ways to detect them.
  • The particles that make up everything in the universe can be arranged in lots of different ways.
  • How the particles are arranged determine whether something is a solid, liquid or gas.

Test yourself on Particles

  • What state are particles which are not touching and are always moving most likely to be in?

  • In which state of matter are particles always touching but able to move past each other?

  • Why can liquid particles move past each other but solid particles cannot move at all?

  • Select the correct statement in each pair.

  • Name the two states of matter that have particles able to move.
