Microscopes

Science: KS3, topic 1.1.1

Magnification and Resolution

When using microscopes, two variables matter the most: magnification and resolution.

Magnification

Magnification

  • Magnification is a measure of how much larger the image is than the object itself.
  • We can use a microscope to magnify things.
  • The image of an object seen through a microscope will appear larger than the real thing.
  • For example, the image from the microscope is 5 times larger than the real object, so the magnification is 5×.
Resolution

Resolution

  • Resolution is the ability to tell apart two or more objects that are close together.
  • The higher the resolution of an image, the better the quality of the image is.

Test yourself on Microscopes

  • When using microscopes, what are the two variables that matter the most?

  • Two spots on a microscope slide are very close together. Which statement about seeing them as separate spots is correct?

  • Which statement is correct?

  • Claire is in the science lab and wants to see more detail in a sample of cells. What should she improve?
