Charges
Science: KS3, topic 3.4.9
Charges
Particles can exist with a charge or no charge.

Charges
- Particles can have positive charges.
- Particles can have negative charges.
- Particles can have no charge.

Neutral atoms and ions
- Overall an atom is neutral.
- An atom has no charge.
- If an atom becomes charged, we call this an ion.

Particles in the atom
- Protons have a positive charge.
- Neutrons have no charge.
- Neutrons are neutral.
- Electrons have a negative charge.

Becoming charged
- If an atom loses an electron it will become positively charged.
- If an atom gains an electron it will become negatively charged.

Attract or repel?
- Two oppositely charged particles will attract each other.
- Two particles with the same charge will repel each other.
Test yourself on Charges
Which statement is correct?
What happens when two charges are the same type?
Why does an atom become positively charged when it loses an electron?
Why is a neutral atom not an ion?
