Alloys
Science: KS3, topic 2.6.11
Alloys

What is an alloy?
- An alloy is a combination of two or more elements.
- At least one of the elements is a metal.

Different sized ions
- The ions of the different elements in an alloy are different sizes.
- This creates a distorted layered structure.

Alloys are stronger
- The distorted layers make it harder for the layers to slide over each other.
- This happens when a force is applied to the alloy.
- So alloys are harder and stronger than pure metals.

Uses of alloys
- Alloys are often used in construction because they are strong.
- Steel is an alloy that is commonly used in construction.
