Energy Stores & Pathways

Science: KS3, topic 3.1.1

Energy Stores and Pathways

Energy can be stored or transferred via pathways. Energy is measured in Joules (J).

Energy stores

Energy stores

  • Energy is stored in eight ways:
  • Kinetic energy (moving objects).
  • Elastic energy (stretched or squeezed objects).
  • Thermal internal energy (in warm objects).
More energy stores

More energy stores

  • Energy is stored in eight ways:
  • Chemical energy (energy from a fuel).
  • Nuclear energy (radioactive objects).
  • Magnetic energy (magnetic objects).
Further energy stores

Further energy stores

  • Energy is stored in eight ways:
  • Electrostatic energy (charged objects).
  • Gravitational potential energy (lifted objects).
Energy pathways

Energy pathways

  • Energy moves by four pathways:
  • Mechanically (moving energy over a distance by force).
  • Electrical (moving electrons in a current).
Heating and radiation

Heating and radiation

  • Radiation (such as lightwaves, radio waves and microwaves can be energy pathways).
  • Heating
  • Heat moves from hotter to colder places if there is a temperature difference.

Test yourself on Energy Stores & Pathways

  • Which of these is NOT an energy pathway?

  • What is a mechanical energy transfer?

  • A toaster warms bread using an electric current that flows through its heating wires. Which energy pathway transfers the energy through the wires?

  • A metal spoon at 90 °C is placed next to a glass of water at 10 °C. Which object receives heat energy?
