Uses of Electromagnets
Electromagnets are all around us. Most devices contain electromagnets without you knowing.

Common uses
- Electromagnets can be found in:
- Television sets.
- Maglev trains.
- MRI machines.

Other devices
- Electromagnets can be found in:
- Loudspeakers.
- Scrapyard cranes that are able to pick up and move vehicles.
- Electric bells.

DC motors
- If an electrical item moves, chances are it has an electric motor.
- A motor is a coil of wire between two magnets.

Motor effect
- When the wire is placed between the magnets in their magnetic field it moves.
- The movement is called the motor effect.
Test yourself on Uses of Electromagnets
Which of these does NOT contain an electromagnet?
Which of these items is most likely to contain an electric motor?
A coil of wire in a motor moves because it sits inside a magnetic field between two magnets. What would most likely happen if the coil was taken out of the field?
