Magnets

You have probably used magnets without knowing it.

Poles

Poles

  • Magnets have two poles which are found at either end of the magnet.
  • The poles are named the South Pole and the North Pole.
  • Opposite poles attract.
  • Like poles repel.
Non-contact forces

Non-contact forces

  • Magnetic forces are non-contact forces.
  • Magnets do not have to be touching to pull together.
Magnetic materials

Magnetic materials

  • Not all metals are magnetic.
  • Steel is often magnetic.
  • However, steel is a mixture of metals called an alloy.
  • Steel contains Iron.
Magnetic metals

Magnetic metals

  • The only magnetic metals are:
  • Nickel - Ni
  • Iron - Fe
  • Cobalt - Co

Test yourself on Magnets

  • Which of these is NOT a magnetic element?

  • Which are true of magnets?

  • Which of these is true about magnets?

  • A compass needle's South pole is held next to a bar magnet's South pole. What happens to the two poles?
