Filtration

Filtration
Insoluble solutes do not dissolve in a solvent. You can separate insoluble solutes from a solvent by filtering the mixture.

Filtering
- You can filter a substance when there is an insoluble solute in a solvent.
- You can filter a mixture of sand and water.
- Filtering the mixture will separate the sand from the water.

Filtering sand and water
- You can filter sand and water using filter paper.

Pouring sand and water
- You can pour sand and water through filter paper.
- The sand particles will not pass through the small holes in the filter paper.
- Only the water solvent will pass through the filter paper.

Residue and filtrate
- Sand residue is left on the filter paper.
- Water passes through as the filtrate.

Water treatment
- Water treatment plants filter water before it gets to our taps.
- The water goes through many filters.
- Each filter stops large insoluble solids from passing through.

Filtering sand from saltwater
- You can get safe water from saltwater and sand.
- First, filter the mixture.
- Filtering separates the insoluble sand from the saltwater.
- To get safe water, separate the salt from the water.

Separating salt and water
- You can separate salt from water by boiling the water.
- The water will evaporate when boiled.
- The salt will crystallise when the water boils.

Condensing the water
- Next, condense the water you have boiled.
- The condensed water will be separated from the salt.
- The water will be safe to drink.
