Friction 1

Science: KS3, topic 3.2.12

Friction

Two objects rub or slide together. Friction is the force that slows the objects down.

Friction

Friction

  • Friction is the force when two objects rub together or slide past each other.
  • When you walk, there is friction between your shoes and the ground.
Thermal energy

Thermal energy

  • Friction makes thermal energy.
  • The energy is often lost to the object's surroundings.
Air resistance

Air resistance

  • Air resistance is a type of friction.
  • You can reduce air resistance by streamlining an object so it is more aerodynamic.
Useful friction

Useful friction

  • The soles of your shoes have worn out and there is no grip.
  • Worn soles with no grip reduce friction.
  • You put oil on your bike chain to reduce friction around the chain and gears.
Snow chains

Snow chains

  • Snow chains are used on tyres.
  • The chains increase friction between a car's wheel and a snow-covered road.
  • The chains prevent the car from skidding.

Test yourself on Friction 1

  • Which of these is NOT an example of friction?

  • Which of these are examples of friction?

  • Which of these is NOT an example of useful friction?
