The Earth's Field
Science: KS3, topic 3.4.13
Earth's Magnetic Field
Just like a magnet, the Earth has a magnetic field. The Earth's magnetic field exists because the Earth's core contains iron.

The Earth's core
- The iron core causes a magnetic field around the Earth.
- The Earth's core is often called a giant bar magnet.

Effect of the Earth's field
- The Earth's magnetic field deflects ionising radiation from space.
- The deflected radiation appears as the Aurora Borealis.
- The Aurora Borealis is also called the Northern Lights.

The field for navigation
- Birds, turtles and whales are all thought to use the Earth's magnetic field for navigation.
- We also use the magnetic field for navigation when we use a compass.
