Friction 2

Science: KS3, topic 3.2.13

Friction and Air Resistance

Friction is the force made when two surfaces rub together. Friction opposes motion and often causes heating.

Friction

Friction

  • Friction opposes motion and often causes heating.
  • Separating two surfaces with a thin layer of oil can reduce friction.
  • The oil layer allows the surfaces to move more freely across each other.
Fidget spinners

Fidget spinners

  • Fidget spinners reduce friction as much as possible to let them spin for longer.
Air resistance

Air resistance

  • Air resistance is a frictional force.
  • Air resistance opposes an object's motion.

Test yourself on Friction 2

  • What does friction often cause between two surfaces?

  • Which of these statements is true?

  • What would not help reduce the friction between two surfaces?
