Temperature and Black Bodies
All bodies (objects) emit radiation. The temperature of a body (object) is linked to the intensity (rate) and wavelength of the emitted radiation. Black bodies are perfect absorbers and emitters of radiation - they never reflect or transmit radiation.
All bodies (objects) emit radiation. The temperature of a body affects the intensity (rate)and the type of radiation. Black bodies are perfect at absorbing and emitting radiation. They do not reflect or transmit radiation.

Constant temperature
- An object at a steady temperature absorbs radiation at the same rate it emits radiation.

Changing temperature
Heat moves from a hotter area to a colder area.
Radiators work because of this principle.
When an object's internal temperature is higher than its surroundings, it emits radiation faster than if it were in a warmer environment.
Test yourself on Temperature & Black Bodies
When does an object emit radiation faster?
Which of these is a property of a perfect black body?
A sealed flask stays at a steady temperature. An open mug loses heat quickly and cools down. Which container's contents absorb and emit radiation at the same rate?
