Work
Science: KS3, topic 3.2.21
Calculating work
Work in Physics is the energy transformation that has taken place. You work hard in your Science lessons. So you transfer lots of energy to your learning.

Work
- Work is the term used in Physics for energy transfer.
- As work is energy it is measured in Joules (J).
- One Joule (1J) is the equivalent of 1 Newton-meter (Nm).

Doing work
- Whenever an object is moved by a force 'work' is done.
- As you reach up and put a book on a bookcase, you are doing work.
- As you walk up a flight of stairs, you are doing work.

Calculating work
- The equation to calculate is: Work = Force x Distance.
- When Work is measured in Joules (J).
- When Force is measured in Newtons (N).
- When Distance is measured in Metres (m).

Kicking a ball
- If you kick a ball 3m with a force of 3N what is the work?
- Work = 3x3 =9J.
- You have transferred 9J of energy.

What are the units of work?
Choose the true statement in each pair
A force of 6 N moves Trolley A 10 m. A force of 12 N moves Trolley B 4 m. Which trolley has more work done on it?
