The Four Sights

On his journeys outside the palace he met four men, and each encounter shocked him.

The old man

From this meeting, Siddhartha learned that no one is young forever, and that life becomes harder as we grow old.

The sick man

This was the first time Siddhartha had encountered serious illness and became aware of suffering.
He saw the suffering of the sick man and the suffering of his worried family.

The dead man

He realised that one day we all must die; life can be short and it is important to make the best use of the time we have.

The holy man

This man appeared happy, even though he had very little.
Siddhartha realised that the comfort of his palace would not bring him happiness or inner peace.

Life outside the palace

Siddhartha decided he must leave the palace to live a more spiritual life.
He wanted to try to discover a way to prevent suffering.
For six years he lived a life with no possessions and he surrounded himself with holy men who gave him advice.
To try and answer his questions about suffering, he fasted and endured pain. But he was disappointed, and no answers came to him.
