Now we can consider how questions about how to behave might be approached by a Christian. Specifically by the medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas.

Natural law

  • Put simply, Aquinas said that there are rules about how human beings should behave.
  • Unsurprisingly, his first starting point for making moral rules was that laws come from God.
    • God created everything in nature.
    • He created it in such a way that, as long as human beings respect his plan, everything will work for their well-being.
    • Natural Law is how human beings cooperate with God’s plan.

Understanding natural law

  • For natural law to work, human beings must be able to know what the natural law is.
    • This is achieved partly because the human mind is able to reason and understand how nature works.
    • And partly because it has been revealed by God, and recorded in the Bible.

Five primary precepts

  • Thomas Aquinas highlights some fundamental examples of what rules can be understood from nature. And which have been revealed by God.
    • They are sometimes called his Five Primary Precepts.
  • Firstly, God should be worshipped and obeyed.
    • This is the natural consequence of a belief that we are all God’s creatures.
  • Secondly, human beings should reproduce.
    • Because if they don’t the human race will die out.

  • Thirdly, people should live in an ordered society.
    • Because this is the way in which people can be safe and make progress.
  • Fourthly, innocent life needs to be protected.
    • If people are allowed to harm and kill each other without restraint, there would be chaos.
  • Finally, children need to be educated.
    • Because that is how they also come to understand the correct way to live their lives.
