Monotheism or Polytheism?

  • One question we will discuss is whether Hindus believe in one God or many gods.
    • Certainly, the prehistoric religions were polytheist.
  • And Hinduism reflects this polytheism to some extent.
    • But Hindus also believe in a single unifying supreme deity, referred to as Brahman.
    • Brahman can be portrayed by many different deities.

Santana Dharma

  • The name Hinduism really relates to the region from which the religion emerged.
    • This region is the valley of the Indus River.
  • Another way of describing Hinduism is with the term ‘Santana Dharma’.
    • Santana Dharma means ‘the eternal way’.
    • This indicates that Hindus believe that their form of worship has roots far in the past, and may even be eternal.

The eternal way

  • The reference to an eternal ‘way’ also indicates that at the heart of Hinduism is a way of life.
    • Also, it indicates the belief that a person’s position in life carries certain duties.
  • These form a code of behaviour that is religious, but which also describes how human beings should live in society.
    • This eternal code has been revealed through many ages. Particularly through the ancient scripture, the Vedas.

Indian nationalism

  • There are followers of many religions in India, but by far the vast majority of Indians are Hindus.
    • Combined with the ancient origins of the religion, this means that most Indians believe there is an unbreakable knot that binds India with Hinduism.
  • So, Hinduism is the indispensable religion of India.
