Scripture Against Racism

Some Christians have used scripture to prove a case against slavery.

The fight against slavery

William Wilberforce was a British politician who became a devout Christian.
He said he wanted to put his beliefs into action so he turned his attention to slavery, which he believed to be un-Christian.
He joined other Christians in a long campaign to end British involvement in the slave trade.
This resulted in The Slave Trade Act of 1807, which made it illegal for British merchants to transport slaves.

Liberation Theology

A more recent Christian response to the issue of racism is Liberation Theology.
Liberation Theology was first developed in Latin America.
It says that to respect Jesus’ teaching (especially Luke 4:18), Christians must prioritise freeing those who are oppressed.
This underlines the belief of many Christians that everyone is a brother and sister, regardless of race.
