The Future of Christianity

Christianity faces the challenge of adapting to the modern world. Many people see its teaching and worship as stuck in the past.

Adapting to the modern world

Some Christians say that adapting to the modern world is important for the future of Christianity.
- Other Christians say that what is taught in the Bible is the absolute truth. So the Bible cannot be adapted to suit the modern world.
- Some Catholics might also say that the way they worship is part of their tradition. Tradition should be respected not thrown away.

Questions for the future of Christianity

The debate on whether to adapt to the modern world raises many important questions for Christians:
- Do they treat other people as Jesus taught and showed in his own life?
- Are the teachings of the Christian Churches something that people in the modern world can accept?
- Do Christians worship God in a way that is attractive to the present generation?

The poor and powerless

The current Pope Francis asked for people to live and support each other as brothers and sisters.
- Many Christians believe the Church should encourage caring for suffering people around the world.
In the Catholic Church last century there was a movement called Liberation Theology.
- Liberation Theology teaches that Christians should follow the example of Jesus. Jesus said the most important thing is to help those who are poor and cannot help themselves.

The role of women

One problem for the Christian Church is no women were in leadership for almost its entire history.
- This has been changing. In the Church of England, for example, there are now female priests and bishops.
But this is not true of all Christian Churches.
- The Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church still don't allow women to be priests or lead worship.

Christianity and science

Science teaches us that the Universe came into existence billions of years ago, and human beings evolved relatively recently.
- But, some Christians believe God created humans and the world from the Creation Story in the Bible.
This conflict can put some Christians at odds with the modern world.
- Many Christians want to find a way for science and religious beliefs to exist side by side.
