Caste and Religion

Both Hinduism and Buddhism believe in the concept of reincarnation. Reincarnation is where after death a person is reborn in a new form.

The cycle of reincarnation

Samsara is the name for the cycle of reincarnation, followers hope to escape the cycle.
Escape from samsara is sometimes called ‘moksha’.

Escape from reincarnation

In India, people believe that their position in the caste system shows how close they are to moksha.
- People closer to the top of the social ladder are closer to release.
Followers believe that the deeds of the previous life decide the caste of the next life.
- A Dalit will need to go through more cycles of reincarnation than a Brahmin to escape.

The Buddha and the caste system

The Buddha was born into one of the highest social classes.
- He rejected the idea that someone is either a Brahmin or an untouchable by birth.
- The Buddha said that enlightenment (nirvana) could happen to anyone, and instead taught that the quality of a person is due to their deeds.
