The importance of castes

  • This division is a hierarchy with each group having its own social status.
  • Brahmins make up the most respected social class.

The fifth caste

  • A fifth group can also be identified, those who could not be put into one of the other groups.
  • This fifth group is called dalit, or untouchables.
    • The word means broken or scattered.
    • As the name suggests, the untouchables are outcasts. The untouchables are often given the most unwanted jobs, such as street and toilet cleaners.
