Free Will Theodicy

Theodicies argue that, although there is evil and suffering, it is still possible to believe in God. Theodicies say the fact that there is suffering in the world does not mean God cannot exist.

The free will defence

  • The free will defence theodicy asks what kind of human beings God chose to create.
    • Most religions believe that God gave human beings free will. This means that we have the ability to choose what to do and how to behave.
  • Without free will, human beings would be like robots - only able to do what their programming allows!
    • If human beings are like robots, then some would question the very meaning of life.

The free will defence (cont.)

  • Without free will, we would never actually choose what we do. We would not genuinely love our family and friends. We would not choose to follow God’s commands or to love to God.
    • We would just do what the programme dictates, and what would be the point of that?
  • But if God wanted to create free human beings, then there was always the possibility that some would choose to behave badly.
    • This bad behaviour is an unfortunate but necessary consequence of free will.

Criticisms of the free will defence

  • Some philosophers disagree with the free will defence theodicy.
    • If giving human beings free will means many human beings will suffer, then perhaps a perfect being wouldn't have given us free will.
    • The cost of suffering is too great. Maybe such a God wouldn’t have created anyone at all!
