Religious texts can be interpreted to support many points of view.

Women in scripture

Someone who wants to say that men have a higher role in society than women could argue that women were created after men (Genesis 2), and this suggests a lower status.
- It does not necessarily mean that, but that is the problem with trying to understand texts from the Bible.

Equality in scripture

It is possible for Christians to read the Bible and argue that God did not intend all people to be equal.
- It could be interpreted that God created a chain of command.
Christians have been slave owners, and some Christian denominations believe that the husband should be the head of the family.
Some Christians have been at the forefront of change, working towards a more equal society.
