Caliph means ‘successor’, which indicates the leadership of the Muslim community. In the years after Muhammad’s death, it was the Sunni tradition of Islam that prospered. Islam, led by caliphs, spread as a religion and a political power.

The Rightly Guided Caliphs

  • Sunni Muslims refer to the first four Caliphs - Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali - as Rightly Guided.
    • This is because each of them had been companions of Muhammad.
  • This period, known as the Rashidun Caliphate, immediately followed Muhammad’s death.
    • It was a time of huge expansion for the Islamic Empire.

Growth of the Islamic Empire

  • The Islamic Empire soon conquered Persia, Syria, and Egypt.
    • This expansion required the organisation of finances, and the creation of wells and canals to transport goods.
    • The Rashidun Caliphate lasted for 30 years.
  • Each of the Rightly Guided Caliphs is known for their achievements in developing Islam.
    • Umar, for example, was a very able administrator of the expanding Islamic Empire.
    • Uthman produced the first written copies of the Qur’an.

The Umayyad Caliphate

  • The Umayyad Caliphate was the second period of expansion, under a new set of Caliphs.
    • They came to power following the assassination of Ali, and were members of Uthman’s clan.
  • The Umayyad Caliphate lasted until 750.
    • At its height, the Empire included Spain, most of North Africa, Arabia, and an extensive region to the east of the Mediterranean.
    • It was also a time of development in the understanding of science and medicine.

The Abbasid Caliphate

  • The Umayyad Caliphate was overthrown by the rebellion of another Arab clan, the Abbasids.
    • This dynasty ruled the Islamic world from 750 – 1517.
    • Its first rulers descended from an uncle of Muhammad.
  • This caliphate is said to mark the Golden Age of Islam.

The Golden Age of Islam

  • The Abbasids had a huge impact on Islamic Literature, Philosophy, science and medicine.
    • Muslim craftsmen excelled in the arts and architecture.
  • Like many empires it had periods of growth, but also of division and discord, not least between Sunnis and Shias.
    • Nevertheless, it established the political and religious dominance of Islam in the Middle East and beyond.
  • The Abbasids fell after the conquest of Egypt by Muslims from Turkey. This was the establishment of the Ottoman Caliphate in 1517.
