There are a number of different moral questions that can be raised about abortion.

Right to life

Some people believe that from the moment a child is conceived it has the same rights as every living human being.
- So, to end that life is murder.
This, for example, is the view of the Catholic Church.
- Because they believe life comes from God, then that life is holy.

When does life begin?

Then there is the question when does the life growing in the mother’s womb gain human rights?
- We have seen the view of some Christians is that life begins at conception.
Some others say that it is at the point where it could survive outside the womb.
- Others say that this only occurs when the actual birth takes place.

Protection of law

This is not just a religious issue.
Human life is protected by law almost everywhere.
- So, the moment at which the baby or foetus in the womb gains the protection of the law is strongly debated.
- Different countries have different rules.
In the UK, for example, abortion is permitted for social or economic reasons up to 24 weeks.
- It is permitted later than 24 weeks for other reasons, such as to protect the mother’s health.

Making life and death decisions

Many who believe that abortion should sometimes be allowed also ask whose decision it should be.
- Some say that the person most affected, usually said to be the mother, has the right to choose. Others say that only God has the right to make life and death decisions.
The fundamental question raised here is at what point that baby or foetus becomes a protected human life.
- It also asks who is entitled to make these life and death decisions.
