Why is equality important? Is everyone truly equal? Equality is an important and ever-changing concept within our world.

Why is equality important?

Some people say equality is important because they believe God made everyone equal.
Other people say that equality is 'self-evident': that it is obviously true.

Statements of equality

The Bible says that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26).
The Constitution of the United States begins: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights”.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights written by the United Nations (UN) says that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Is everyone truly equal?

Some people point out that, in reality, not everyone is equal.
- Some people are born stronger, more intelligent, or better at sports.
Equality does not mean that everyone has the same abilities - it means that everyone should have the same rights and opportunities.
No one should be given an advantage or face discrimination because of their race, gender, or social class.
