Ibrahim & Hajar
Ibrahim and Hajar
Ibrahim and Hajar
Ibrahim and his wife Hajar are important figures in Islam.
Ibrahim and polytheism
Ibrahim and polytheism
- Ibrahim/Abraham is important to the back story of Muhammad and the development of Islam.
- From an early age, Ibrahim struggled with the polytheism around him.
- He could not accept that there were lots of powers controlling things.
Ibrahim and the one God
Ibrahim and the one God
- Ibrahim discovered God and taught others about Him. From a Muslim perspective, Abraham is neither Jewish, Christian, nor Muslim.
- Instead, he is a hernif - somebody who knows that there is really only one God.
- The Qur’an praises him for this understanding.
Hajar and Ibrahim
Hajar and Ibrahim
- Ibrahim was told to take his wife Hajar/Hajira and his son Ismail to set up a new home in Arabia.
- He provided them with basic supplies and left.
- After a few days the food and drink ran out and mother and son suffered hunger and dehydration.
- Hajar ran around looking for help. She ran up and down two hills called Safa and Marwah but yet she found no help.
Hajar and the spring
Hajar and the spring
- Hajar collapsed and started praying to Allah.
- Suddenly, Ismail hit his foot against the ground and a spring of water burst up.
- Hajar was amazed to see water flowing out of the earth!
- As she scooped up the water, it continued to flow, so she said ‘Zome, zome’. This meant ‘Stop, stop’ because she was worried the water would run out!
Hajar and The Angel Jibril
Hajar and The Angel Jibril
- The Angel Jibril said to Hajar:
- "Don’t be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects his people".
- They collected the water and sold it, using the money to buy food.
