Theravada Buddhism

  • The word Theravada means ‘the teaching of the elders’ as these Buddhists believe they have remained faithful to the Buddha’s original teachings.

Samatha

  • The emphasis of Samatha meditation is on becoming calm.
  • Theravada Buddhists achieve this through controlled breathing and focusing on breathing itself.
  • This helps to quiet all outside thoughts and worries, and so calms the mind.
  • When the mind becomes calmer and clearer, fear and anger disappear and people begin to become kinder to themselves and to others.

Vipassana

  • Vipassana means ‘to see things as they really are'.
  • To gain 'insight' Buddhists focus on the Three Marks of Existence, Anicca, Dukkha, and Anatta.
  • Buddhists believe that fully understanding these Marks brings enlightenment.
  • Using breathing like Samatha, this form of meditation values calmness.
  • Once the mind is calm, a person can look at their past experiences and try to understand what wisdom each experience teaches.
