Christian Beliefs about the Baby Jesus

Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Christian beliefs about Jesus, and his birth in the Nativity story, are celebrated by Christians each year at Christmas.

The Virgin Mary

Mary was a virgin, and Jesus was not born after a sexual relationship.
Joseph was not his biological father, but his foster father.
Instead, Jesus is the Son of God.

The Son of God

Christians believe in the incarnation.
- This is the belief that God took human form in Jesus.
- This is why Christians call Jesus the Son of God.
- Christians believe that Jesus was both God and human at the same time.
They believe that God sent Jesus to teach God’s ways, and to suffer and die to save people from sin.

Jesus' birth

Jesus was born in a stable, into a poor family.
- Some Christians say that God chose to send his son as an ordinary person, not as someone rich or powerful.
- This is so what Jesus did and taught would have special meaning for ordinary people around the world.

The Three Wise Men

The Three Wise Men were Gentiles, which means they were not Jewish:
- This suggests that Jesus was sent as a saviour for all people, not just for Jews.
- Their gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh – are thought to symbolise that Jesus was a king (the gold), that he was God’s son (the frankincense) and that he would suffer and die (the myrrh).
