The Book of Genesis
The Book of Genesis
The Book of Genesis opens with the creation story.
The Creation Story
The Creation Story
- This brief overview is not intended to describe exactly how the world came about.
- Instead, the chapter teaches that the world has a creator and a purpose.
- Creation is described as “very good”.
- Humans were in charge, but that doesn’t mean they can abuse their power.
- According to Genesis 2:15, “God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and guard it”.
Adam and Eve
Adam and Eve
- Adam and Eve disobey God’s instructions which banned them from eating from the Tree of Knowledge.
- God punished them and sent them away from the Garden of Eden.
- Before, they were able to experience God. Now it would be more difficult.
Sin
Sin
- Before Adam and Eve's sin, it was easier to choose the right thing to do.
- After the sin, good and evil would be harder to identify.
- Life is now more challenging and developing a connection with God is more difficult.
Nakedness
Nakedness
- Even though Adam and Eve made a bad choice, God continued to look after them.
- God provided clothes for them to hide their embarrassment of being naked.
- Their nakedness visually showed that Adam & Eve were different from God.
- By covering them up with clothes, God gave them a chance to rebuild their relationship with him.
