The Vedas

  • The Vedic Period was a time when various tribes in Northern India began to come together.
    • These tribes also developed a common way of life.
  • This way of life and religious practices were recorded in texts known as the Vedas.
    • The Vedas form part of the sacred scripture of Hinduism.

Vedic society

  • As these tribes settled, the people developed an urban way of life.
    • They formed townships and established principalities and kingdoms.
  • Social classes began to develop which, over time, became the basis of the caste system.
    • This caste system indicated the social responsibilities of groups within society. For example, administrators and merchants.

Vedic culture

  • Vedic society relied on agriculture and later also on trade.
    • The reliance on agriculture also meant that the rivers, especially the Ganges, were of vital importance.
  • Other economic activities included work with metals (gold and bronze) and the manufacture of jewellery.

Vedic Religion

  • The Vedic period also saw the development of the Vedic religion.
  • Vedic religion believed in a series of deities, including:
    • Agni, who represented the fire of sacrifice.
    • The Sun god, Surya.
    • And the lord of the Wind, Vayu.
  • Another characteristic of Vedic religion is the belief that rivers were goddesses. This is due to their importance for life and growth.

Vedic worship

  • Worship of Vedic gods took the form of sacrifice and chanting of verses from sacred texts.
    • Vedic people prayed to the gods for many important things, such as rain and children. They prayed to live full and happy lives.
    • They also believed that the universe had a certain order, and everything in it needed to follow that order.
  • These beliefs and practices are what is known as Brahmanical Ideology, or Brahmanism.

Sacred texts

  • A very important feature of Brahmanism was the writing of sacred texts. These texts are called ‘The Vedas’.
  • The Vedas are made up of a variety of different texts.
    • These texts include instructions about how to perform worship and include poetry and mantras.
    • There are also texts which give instruction about social and moral behaviour.
  • The Vedas include the Rig-Veda. This has hymns and instructions on how to perform religious rituals.
    • The Vedas also include the Upanishads, which speak about meditation and philosophy.
