Whilst the UK is generally quite progressive, there is always room for improvement.

Is the UK an equal society?

We might like to believe that the UK is a place where everyone is treated equally, but most people would argue that this is not the case.
- Women were historically expected to stay at home and look after the family whilst their husbands worked.
It is still difficult for women to reach the top of their career professions.
- Fewer than half of the smaller companies listed on the London Stock Exchange have any women executives.

Examples of inequality in the UK

Sometimes Black people have found it hard to find any work at all.
- Unemployment in the UK is twice as high for Black people as it is for white people.
There is no reason to believe that wealthy children are more intelligent, yet pupils at fee-paying (public) schools are much more likely to get into Oxford or Cambridge.

Inequality around the world

Inequality has been, and is, worse in other countries.
Until the 1960s, in some parts of the United States, Black and white children did not go to the same schools or colleges, and Black people could not sit in the same part of the bus as white people.
