  • At Jesus' trial, the Roman Governor sentenced Jesus to death.
    • Jesus' claims to be King were too great a challenge to the Roman leaders.
  • Roman soldiers were ordered to kill Jesus by crucifixion.
    • Jesus was nailed up to a high cross by his hands and feet. This was a common way at the time for the Romans to kill rebels and criminals.

Pontius Pilate

  • Pontius Pilate asked Jesus “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “So you say”.
    • Pilate then turned to the crowd and asked if they wanted Jesus or Barabbas to be set free.
    • The crowd chose the well-known criminal Barabbas to be set free instead of Jesus. Jesus was crucified.
  • Jesus' body was buried in a tomb that belonged to one of his followers.

The Resurrection

  • Jesus' body was buried in a tomb that belonged to one of his followers.
    • On the day after the Sabbath, early in the morning, women went to treat Jesus' body, but the body was gone.
    • Jesus was later seen alive by his followers and this is called the Resurrection.
  • The Bible says that more than 500 people saw Jesus alive again.

Bible accounts of The Resurrection

  • There are lots of stories in the Gospels about what Jesus did after he was resurrected.
    • The Gospel of Luke says that Jesus took his disciples to a hill. There he blessed them and told them to spread his teaching through all the world.
    • Afterwards, Jesus was lifted up to Heaven. Most Christians celebrate the time that the Gospels say he died and was raised from the dead as the holiday of Easter.
