Frederick Nietzsche - How to Live Without Religion

Frederick Nietzsche

Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher. He wrote that ‘God is dead’. What he meant is that The Enlightenment showed people no longer needed to believe in God and that science had won over the myths of religion.

Nietzsche and morality

One of the most important points Nietzsche made was about Christian morality.
- Those who believe in God say that everyone is bound to obey God’s law. Without God, then there is no universal moral law.
For Nietzsche, this is a good thing because he believed that Christian morality ties people down.
- It was created by the strong to keep the masses obedient, like servants.
- It told them to be self-sacrificing and left them unable to maximise their individual potential.

Envy

Nietzsche also said that people should embrace envy.
- Envy is a sin in the eyes of Christians.
But Nietzsche said there is nothing wrong in envying people who are living the kind of life we would like to live.
- Envy drives us to try harder to make the best of ourselves.

Mensch und Ubermensch

Mensch und Ubermensch is another idea expressed by Nietzsche.
- It is translated as someone being either a human or a superhuman.
The person who aspires to be a superhuman tries to give full meaning to their life on earth.
- They reject those who say that human life can only be fulfilled after death, in heaven. This means that they technically reject Christians.

Alcohol

Nietzsche was also teetotal, meaning that he did not drink alcohol.
- It's said he drank only water, and milk sometimes as a treat!
He considered the use of alcohol as a way of relieving the pain people feel about the life they are living.
- But it is no solution, and in fact takes away the will to change and improve our lives.

Nietzsche and Plato’s Cave

In his writings, Nietzsche referred to Plato’s parable of the cave.
- He wrote: ‘God is dead, but given the way of men, there may still be caves for thousands of years in which his shadow will be shown'.
People have come to rely on rules and to accept what they have been told to do and to believe.
- Nietzsche knew that the kind of freedom he proposed is frightening.
- And he knew that not everyone would be brave enough to embrace it.
