- “El laberinto del fauno” fue lanzada en el año 2006 y está ambientada en el año1944; es decir, cinco años después de que acabara la guerra civil española.
- "Pan's Labyrinth" was released in 2006 and is set in 1944; that is to say, five years after the Spanish civil war ended.

- En la guerra pelearon dos bandos: el bando republicano, de ideología de izquierda y a favor de la República, y el bando franquista, de derecha y en contra de la República Española.

- The war was won by Franco's side, which in the film is represented by Vidal, his soldiers and the powerful people of the town (the priest and the mayor) who have dinner at Vidal's mill.

- El bando perdedor está representado por los maquis o los milicianos, que viven en el bosque y buscan desestabilizar a la dictadura del general Franco.

- También hay desigualdad entre pobres y ricos: los pobres (llamados "gentuza" por Vidal) hacen cola para los alimentos y necesitan cartillas de racionamiento, mientras los ricos comen lo que quieren.
- There is also inequality between poor and wealthy: the poor (whom Vidal calls “scum”) queue up for food and need rationing cards, while the wealthy eat whatever they want.

- De hecho Vidal encarna el dictador general Franco ya que tiene poder absoluto no solo sobre sus soldados sino sobre todo el mundo que vive en el molino y el pueblo.

- El autoritarismo del franquismo es claro cuando el capitán mata a dos campesinos sin que puedan defenderse. Cundo el campesino dice “mi padre es honrado”, Vidal responde: “eso lo decidiré yo”.
- The Francoist authoritarianism is clear when the captain kills two peasants who cannot defend themselves. When the peasant says "My father is honest", Vidal answers: "I will decide that".

- Esto se ve también cuando Vidal tortura a un miliciano enemigo del bando republicano y dice “por encima de mí no hay nadie”, comparándose con el General Franco, que tenía poder absoluto.
- This is also seen when Vidal tortures a militiaman who is an enemy of the republican side and says "there is no one above me", comparing himself to General Franco, who had absolute power.
