The Chinese One Belt One Road Initiative

In 2013, President Xi of China launched the One Belt One Road initiative. This invests in infrastructure in Asia to develop trade routes, but also to build relationships with Chinese businesses and the Chinese government.

What is the aim of One Belt One Road?

China invests money in infrastructure projects in countries like Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Kazakhstan. Interest is paid on the loans.
Chinese businesses often earn money from the projects. For example, if a new railway line is being built, this may be done by a Chinese construction company.
If a country's trade routes & infrastructure are better with China than another country, they are more likely to import and export goods with China.

What are examples of One Belt One Road projects?

In Hanoi, Vietnam, the new airport and new urban rail system were built using some Chinese funding.
A new dry port has been created in the Kazakh town of Khorgos, connecting the EU and China.
Between 2014 and 2018, $32bn was invested in Pakistan and $17bn was invested in Indonesia.

Tom Miller says 'the goal is to create a web of informal alliances lubricated by Chinese cash'.
In 2019, India stopped supporting the One Belt One Road initiative, perhaps fearing that it could reduce India's power in Asia.
