  • Much development aid has been targeted at healthcare - one highly contagious disease, small-pox, has been eliminated as a result of global vaccination campaigns.
  • The number of people living in extreme poverty has declined from 1.9 billion in 1990 to 836 million in 2015.

  • Teaching personal hygiene and the need for safe water and proper sanitation have helped contain killer contagious diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
  • There have been some improvements in gender equality and access to primary education.

Malaria Eradication

Malaria is a disease that can be fatal if not treated, and is spread by the female Anopheles mosquito.

  • Malaria can be eradicated by:
    • Draining the swampy areas where the Anopheles mosquito (the carrier of the disease) breeds, and spraying those areas with DDT or similar chemicals.
    • Distributing mosquito nets for people to sleep under as people are most likely to be bitten when they are asleep.
Medical eradication

Medical eradication

  • Malaria can be eradicated by:
    • Encouraging those in at risk areas to take preventive medicine. These drugs do not cure the disease but they reduce the risks of contracting it.
    • A trial of an anti-malaria vaccine, to be licensed soon hopefully.
