  • All films must be certified before they are released to ensure the audience are protected from any unsuitable themes.
  • The BBFC categories film in U, PG, 12, 12A, 15 and 18 certificates.
12A certification

12A certification

  • A 12A means children under the age of 12 can watch the film as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
  • This certification is for cinema release only.
  • The film will be certificated as a 12 when it goes onto DVD and other platforms and it is not possible to ensure a child under 12 would watch the product with an adult.

  • The key areas that are considered for certification are:
    • Discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, and violence.
Audience reach

  • When making a film the producers will need to bear in mind what certification the film would get in order to target their audience.
  • A 12A/12 film ensures a large audience reach, whereas a 15 and 18 limit the potential target audience and so limit the overall profit that can be made.
