- Funding is essential for a media product to be produced and distributed.
- If a company is vertically/horizontally/diagonally integrated it will benefit from a larger budget to begin with.
- This will be funded through commercial sales.
Independent funding
Independent funding
- If a company is an independent company they often rely on funding from other companies which can include charities.
- The BBC is a public service broadcaster and they are uniquely funded through the TV license.
- Here, members of the public who own a TV pay a yearly license fee and this is what fund the BBC.
- This is why the BBC do no have any adverts on their programmes.

Regulation of industries is important in order to protect the public. Each industry has a different regulating body.

- TV and radio are regulated by Ofcom (Office of Communications).
- Film and music videos are regulated by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification).

- Print (newspaper and magazines) are regulated by a voluntary body called IPSO (independent press standards organisation).
- Video games are regulated by Video Standards Council using the PEGI (Pan European Game Information) rating system.
