Test yourself

Types of Contractions

Isotonic

  • Isotonic contractions involve the performer changing their body position. They are either concentric or eccentric.
  • Eccentric contractions occur during the lowering phase of a movement, e.g. squatting before taking-off whilst jumping to make a block in volleyball.

Isometric

  • Isometric contractions exist where the performer is in a fixed position. The muscles are under tension but no movement is taking place.
