Biology: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 6.1.8

Is a Gene Bigger than DNA?

A gene is a segment of DNA. But there can be fragments of DNA that are smaller than a gene. This question is like asking whether a city or a community is bigger. They are kind of the same depending on how you define them.

  • How many chromosomes does a human body cell contain?

  • Why does a gene determine which protein a cell makes?

  • A chromosome contains a large number of genes. What does this tell you about the size of a chromosome compared with a single gene?

  • A human body cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, and one chromosome in each pair comes from each parent. How many chromosomes in a body cell come from a person's mother?

  • A chromosome contains a large number of genes, and each gene codes for a specific protein. What does this tell you about the proteins made using a single chromosome?
