Biology: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 5.2.11

The Eye

The iris controls pupil diameter and the quantity of light reaching the retina. If there isn't much light then the iris will make our pupils dilate (get bigger).

Pupil dilating

Test yourself on Eye Anatomy

  • What happens to the pupil when there isn't much light available?

  • Why does the pupil dilate when there is not much light available?

  • Why do suspensory ligaments connect the ciliary muscles to the lens?

  • How does the function of the iris differ from the function of the ciliary muscles?
