Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is a non-communicable disease. This means that it cannot be transmitted from one organism to another.

What happens when you have coronary heart disease?

What happens when you have coronary heart disease?

  • The coronary arteries narrow because of a build-up of fatty deposits.
  • This reduces blood flow and leads to a lack of oxygen being supplied to the heart muscle.
Analogy: a tunnel

Analogy: a tunnel

  • Imagine people carrying wood to a fire through a tunnel.
  • If the tunnel narrows, fewer people can fit through the tunnel.
  • This means that the fire will start to die out as less wood can reach it.

Test yourself on Coronary Heart Disease

  • Why can a person not catch coronary heart disease from someone who already has it?

  • Why does narrowing of the coronary arteries lead to less oxygen reaching the heart muscle?

  • In the tunnel analogy for coronary heart disease, what does the narrowing tunnel represent?

  • In the tunnel analogy for coronary heart disease, why does the fire start to die out when the tunnel narrows?

  • In the tunnel analogy for coronary heart disease, what does the wood represent?
