Cells & Tissues
Biology: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 2.1.1
Tissues
Cells are the fundamental units (building blocks) that make up all living organisms. Tissues are groups of similar cells that act together to perform a similar function. Examples of tissues are:

Epithelial tissue (animals & plants)
- Epithelial tissue lines the outer surface of organs and blood vessels.

Muscular tissue (animals)
- Muscular tissue can contract to bring about force and motion.

Mesophyll (plants)
- Mesophyll is capable of photosynthesis.

Epidermal tissue (animals & plants)
- Human skin, and the waxy covering of some plants are examples of epidermal tissues.

Choose the true statement in each pair
What can many different types of cells do to build tissues and organs?
A tissue is capable of photosynthesis. Which type of organism would you expect this tissue to belong to?
A tissue contracts to bring about force and motion. Which type of organism would you expect this tissue to belong to?
A tissue lines the outer surfaces of organs and blood vessels. In which types of organisms can this tissue be found?
