Microscopy

Biology: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 1.1.22

Magnification and Resolution

When using microscopes, two variables matter the most: magnification and resolution.

Magnification

Magnification

  • Magnification tells us how many times larger an image seen through a microscope is compared to the real object.
Resolution

Resolution

  • Resolution is the ability to distinguish between (tell apart) two or more objects that are close together.

Test yourself on Microscopy

  • When using microscopes, what are the two variables that matter the most?

  • What would a student observe when looking at two very close spots through a low resolution microscope?

  • Microscope A produces a more magnified image than Microscope B, but Microscope B has better resolution. Which microscope would let a student see two very close objects as two separate shapes?

  • What would a student observe when looking at two very close objects through a high resolution microscope?
