Cell Specialisation in Plants - Phloem

Biology: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 1.1.21

Phloem

The phloem is specialised to transport food products to parts of the plant where they are needed. Phloem vessels are made up of columns of living cells.

Small holes

Small holes

  • The end walls of phloem cells contain small holes to allow food products to move up and down the phloem vessels throughout the plant.

Test yourself on Cell Specialisation in Plants - Phloem

  • Sugars made in a plant's leaves need to reach the roots and growing tips. Which feature of phloem vessels allows these food products to move both up and down the plant?

  • How do phloem vessels differ from xylem vessels in terms of the cells that form them?

  • Which of the following is true about the vessels that transport substances in a plant?

  • Phloem vessels are made up of columns of cells with small holes in their end walls. Why does this arrangement allow food products to be transported throughout the plant?

  • Which of the following correctly describes what phloem and xylem vessels transport?
