The fight against slavery

  • William Wilberforce was a British politician who became a devout Christian.
  • He said he wanted to put his beliefs into action so he turned his attention to slavery, which he believed to be un-Christian.
  • He joined other Christians in a long campaign to end British involvement in the slave trade.
  • This resulted in The Slave Trade Act of 1807, which made it illegal for British merchants to transport slaves.

  • A more recent Christian response to the issue of racism is Liberation Theology.
  • Liberation Theology was first developed in Latin America.
  • It says that to respect Jesus’ teaching (especially Luke 4:18), Christians must prioritise freeing those who are oppressed.
  • This underlines the belief of many Christians that everyone is a brother and sister, regardless of race.
