Creation of the Universe

God’s divine will

God’s divine will

  • In Sikhi, God created the universe through divine will. God simply willed the universe to exist.
  • There was no single creation event. There is no mythological story to explain creation.
  • Everything in the universe simply came into being when God chose it to happen.
  • This creative power is called Hukam (“God’s command” or “divine order”).
Continuous creation

Continuous creation

  • Creation is continuous. It is not something that only happened in the past.
  • God’s presence sustains and renews life at every moment.
  • God is always active in creation, keeping the universe in harmony and balance.
  • Because creation is ongoing, life and the universe are sacred. The world and all beings in it are interconnected.
  • Sikhs show respect for the environment and all forms of life. Harming nature or people is harming the divine presence within them.
